That's a relief [Nov. 7th, 2009|10:15 am]
My car broke down again, but luckily it was the same part so I didn't have to pay to have it fixed. Couldn't have afforded another £200 on it

Eye update [Nov. 7th, 2009|09:32 am]
I had the first check up yesterday, barely 18 hours after the operation. I already had 20/20 vision, and there is still a fair amount of healing tobe done.

I can't believe that there was no pain at any point of the procedure, just some pressure. The most painful thing is wearing the goggles they give you at night. The elastic cord has raised blisters behind my ears...

I have a range of drops to put in regulalry throughout the day, but my aim is already improving. Now at least 1 in 3 of drops actually goes in the eye!

There is a bit of night glare (halos round lights) but that should disappear after a month or so and really isn't a problem. Given how high my prescription was it'a ll really remarkable. Waking up this morning and being able to see the opposite side of the room was pretty weird, but excellent.

We now have a 'leaf fall' timetable for the trains.

My car broke down on Sunday and my mobile phone naturally decided to run out of battery in sympathy.

A nice retired lady let me use her phone to call the rescue services and made me coffee while I waited for them.

I sent her some flowers as a thank you, and today she rang up to thank me and left a very nice message. Which makes me feel good. Doing good deeds makes everyone feel better.

Olympic Site [Oct. 28th, 2009|08:49 pm]
Absolutely amazing. We had a coach tour round the whole site, stopping right outside the Stadium which is massive. The 'Stingray' shaped roof of the aquatic centre looks much better than the design plans.

There was also a whole wealth of information about the area - it's criss-crossed by the multiple tributaries of the River Lea so there are bridges everywhere, which makes it an interesting place to navigate. There was also a lot of discussion about the regeneration of the surrounding areas, which sounds very well planned and should leave a lasting legacy (although you can never tell).

We also were told that they've moved 2000 newts as part of the process and washed 1.5 million tonnes of soil to remove arsenic and lead.

Another interesting tidbit was that there will be 20 000 journalists...compared to 16 000 athletes. The press arrive a whole year in advance to set up shop in the Media centre - which is the largest building on site, outside of the stadium. It's massive!

Private tour of the 2012 Site today. Should be interesting, the velodrome, stadium and water arena are all quite advanced.

Wine [Oct. 22nd, 2009|05:56 pm]
I can't decide if I'm celebrating the completion of a major project, or if the dire nature of it has driven me to drink.

Either way I'm halfway through a bottle of wine and enjoying it.

I think my status as a man just took a hit. I've spent most of the day lying in bed with a cold while my mother redecorates my kitchen...

Well, it keeps her busy as she approaches retirement.

Fortunes [Oct. 7th, 2009|09:24 pm]
It's amazing what estate agents can do with a camera. The pictures looked double the size of the actual property. But the commute and proximity to the station would be fantastic.

I'm not sure I could over-come the claustrophobia though. Unfortunately the worst one for that had a wonderful garden complete with apple tree which is very tempting.

I just won a free-fitting and custom-made shirt. Hurrah! I've wanted one of these for ages. :D

I have more viewings arranged. Despite my intention to not get too involved before viewing, I have found one that seems to meet all requirements AND is near 3 major country parks and wildlife reserves.

I'm also getting ahead of myself. I need to sell mine first.

Estate Agent 3 [Oct. 1st, 2009|04:16 pm]
Yes, first one was definitely trying to scam me. This one also recommended the higher initial marketing price. Apparently they also have about 13 clients waiting for this sort of property - all with deposits and mortgages secured so pretty much instant sale.

I'm excited :D

Estate Agent 2 [Oct. 1st, 2009|11:10 am]
Suggested the minimum asking price as 10 000 above the maximum price suggested by the first estate agent. Much better and fits in better with my own estimates.

Third one coming by later today. Says there is massive demand for this type of property.

Quotes for conveyancing and HIPs seem to vary considerably. Can't decide which will be best value - ie. do things correctly and quickly. Will pick brains of estate agents.

This is all quite fun. :D

[mood | Excited]

Estate Agent came today. Impressive range of marketing, but seem clearly to be quoting a low price to get a fast turnaround and commission. I'm going to insist on a higher price - we can always drop it if it doesn't sell.

I also checked out their 'recommended' 'good' deal on conveyancing and HIP compilation. Turns out I can get both about £300 cheaper elsewhere... I shall be going elsewhere.

But I have the mortgage confirmed and have found quite a selection of suitable properties, some with two-bedrooms, at affordable prices so things are looking up.

I also figured out that I spend over £5 500 a year on travel, so I should save £4000 after tax by moving virtually anywhere else in the London commuter belt. I am looking forward to that. :D

I've also decided to do some minor renovation of the kitchen to achieve a quick sell. It will be the first time I've done any DIY so wish me luck. I'll think I'll just try the painting though and get a professional tiler in for the splashback surfaces.

It's really chilly today. The days of short-sleeved shirts are gone for another 6 months at least.

House is being valued tomorrow.

It's not a good holiday when you're finding it more stressful than being at work.
