| The Starfish has landed |
[Jun. 22nd, 2009|06:25 pm] |
Safe and sound, although being forced to say up until a ridiculous hour to 'adapt' to local time zones nearly killed me.
I've already had a tour of a brewery and located 'Starfish Properties' so we're on a roll. The fudge here is quite good. The beer, so far, is not but I have hopes of a locally brewed blueberry beer to be tried out shortly.
Have also visited the Halifax Citadel and Maritime Museum, both of which were quite interesting. The weather is less than prepossessing but I have been assured that I will see the sun on at least one day of the fortnight. I am insisting on wearing my short-sleeved shirts anyway. |

Tomorrow I shall be in Canada. The suitcase is more or less packed and is just about able to close. I don't think I can carry anoy more books.
All I have to worry about now is getting there in time. They recommend arriving three hours ahead of departure, which is ridiculous. I'm counting on it not being the height of the tourist season yet and the fact that most people will be too technically inept to use the self-service kiosks. |

Woke up at 3.30am again. It's getting annoying.
No idea what's causing it - yesterday was a panic attack but today wasn't. Must be something else causing it. Exhausted as a result.
First ministerial meeting of the environment task force today. Hope all goes well. |

So much for public transport theory. I ended up walking from Liverpool Street to Whitehall. Funny thing is tghat it only took about 10 minutes longer than the usual tube journey.
The Jubilee line seems to be running normally, so I got that back yesterday and will use it again today.
Some morons attacked the building yesterday. We weren't allowed near the windows and all exits were sealed for at least 2 hours.
The annoying thing is that we were given no detail at all, and it's not showing up on any new site. |

I was rather annoyed by the tube strike, but the alternative route research has revealed 3 bus routes going straight from the station to the office - all of which are quicker than my usual tube journey.
Plus, there is always the riverbus option.
We do have a new Minister - the position has actually been upgraded to Minister of State which is good. It's Angela Smith of Basildon who is pretty local to me and I know her by reputation. She asked for the job which is a positive sign of interest.
Now I have to persuade her and three other Ministers to continue with the environmental taskforce. |

This should be interesting. Apparently thiings are going to get really wacky up until the election.
I have ministerial visits on Monday. I wonder if they'll get cancelled? |

Apparently I can't tell when my fish are pregnant.
I've just noticed two tiny babies swimming among the plants at the bottom of the tank. Perfectly formed miniatures of the adults.
I'm really pleased - these fish are supposed to breed prolifically and I was wondering why I hadn't had offspring before now. Obviously the fish I bought were just really immature.
Now to see if they survive the cut and thrust of the tank. I assume there were many more, but only these two escaped being eaten. |

| That was a weird week |
[May. 23rd, 2009|07:42 pm] |
I might go so far as to venture 'bizarre'. By the end of it the whole office was tetchy and completely disinclined to care. Yet without any particular pressures or stimuli to cause it. Atmospheric apathy?
Today I took my care-child out to see Star Trek. Now I've come home and got insufficiently drunk. Every so often I should drop the awareness of the dangers of alcohol addiction and just get completely blotto. |

| | You have to laugh | ] | 1. Woke up with a massive attack of hayfever. 2. Decided to take alternative train to work just to add variety. 3. Alternative train cancelled just as I get on, so get emergency tube. 4. Arm on glasses breaks. 5. Switch at next station to catch direct train. Wander round unfamiliar station blind. 6. New direct train cancelled. 7. Catch indirect alternative train, planning to change at Kings Cross. 8. Arrive Kings Cross 8. Kings Cross closed due to 'over-crowding' and train doesn' stop. 9. Wander blind round 2 further stations trying to get a route to work. 10. Emerge successfully outside workplace ready for two minute walk to office. 11. Get drenched in unpredicted two minute torrential rain. 12. Watch blurry bright sunshine through office window for rest of day.
Plus the emergency fix to the glasses is making me seasick because they're at a funny angle...
I've had better days. And that's without discussing actual work-related issues. |

Your result for The Social Persona Test (What kind of man/woman are you?)...
Lord of the Misfits (QLAM)Quirky Liberal Alpha Male
You are similar to The Fratt Boy, in that you often try to take care of peers you percieve as less successful, but with the added benefit that you actually understand those on the fringes. You are a good ally to have, but people might be hurt if they believe your universal good will is a sign of a close friendship. You are nice to everyone, but you know who your true friends are. In terms of dating, you want someone who shares your interests; other than that, anything goes. You are more QUIRKY than NORMAL. You are more LIBERAL than TRADITIONAL. You are more DOMINANT than PASSIVE. When picking a date, consider: The Rarity (QTAF), The Renaissance Faire Wench (QLAF), The Librarian (QTBF), or The Emo Girl (QLBF) (Image from UNC Library Website) Take The Social Persona Test (What kind of man/woman are you?) at HelloQuizzy

My Deputy Director (manager's manager) wrote in my appraisal that I had performed 'excellently' and had 'great potential'. Coming from someone who isn't extravagant with praise that means quite a lot.
Also, I am going to be line-managing an intern for 6 weeks over the summer. Should be fun. :D |

I picked my first produce yesterday! A leek and a radish.
Both tasted absolutely delicious. It's going to be worth all the effort.
I dug over another bed yesterday. This one will have onions and garlic in. |

There are some really wonderful things to be said for intoxication.
What a pity the euphoria doesn't last. |
